Universidad de Chile lifted their fifteenth Chilean championship after thrashing Cobreloa at the Estadio Nacional of Santiago on Thursday.
Universidad de Chile capped off a remarkable year by winning the Chilean Clausura championship after thrashing Cobreloa 3-0 on Thursday. In winning the title, la 'U' made history in becoming the first team from Chile to win three titles in a single year, with the Chilean Apertura championship and the Copa Sudamericana.

After fighting out a goalless draw with Cobreloa in Calama in the first leg of the final on Monday, Universidad de Chile proved much superior to their opponents in the return leg in front of 50,000 fans at the Estadio Nacional of Santiago.

The Chilean giants cruised to a comfortable victory thanks to first half goals from Gustavo Canales, Eduardo Vargas and Matias Rodriguez, to obtain their fifteenth national championship.

Universidad de Chile went ahead in the 24th minute when Charles Aranguiz sent a left-wing cross into the centre of the area and all Canales had to do was slot the ball home from close-range.

The second goal arrived four minutes later when an exceptional Vargas received the ball in his own half, ran the length of the field before lobbing the ball over Cobreloa goalkeeper Nicolas Peric from the edge of the area.

Once again Vargas demonstrated his class with an extraordinary finish, which incidentally was the striker's last goal for the club. La 'U' recently sold the player to Italy's Napoli for $14.8 million.

In the 32nd minute Canales exited the field due to injury, and his replacement Matias Rodriguez added Universidad's third goal three minutes from coming on when he controlled a clearance from the Cobreloa defense, before firing a crossed shot into the back of the net.

With the match all but settled, Universidad de Chile dominated the second period, but although they continued to create goal-scoring opportunities, Argentine goalkeeper Luciano Palos, who had replaced Peric towards the end of the first half, made a number of fine saves to rescue his side from possible humiliation.

Universidad de Chile celebrated their fifteenth title triumph, but they still trail arch-rivals Colo Colo, with 29 titles. Universidad Catolica have won 10 championships, while Cobreloa have 8 to their name.

In mid-December Universidad de Chile put an end to an 84-year wait for their first international title, when they crushed Liga de Quito of Ecuador 4-0 over two legs to win the Copa Sudamericana.
