About Premier League
The English Premier League (EPL) is England's top-flight division. The league in its current format was founded on February 20, 1992, and is composed of 20 teams that play 38 rounds to contest the title.
The Premier League was established to improve the conditions in which football clubs in the United Kingdom handled their business. A lucrative TV rights deal prompted the creation of the Premier League, which had 22 teams in its inaugural season, with Man United winning the very-first trophy.
The team that earns the highest amount of points after 38 games lifts the title and also enters the Charity Cup for the following season. The three bottom-placed teams are relegated to the EFL Championship. They are replaced by three new clubs from the second division – the champion, the runner-up, and the winner of the promotion playoff.
The top four teams in the competition earn direct qualification to the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. Up to three teams can qualify for the subsequent season’s UEFA Europa League, with two of them making it directly to the group stage. The other team will have to fight their way into the competition from the second playoff round.
The Premier League is not only home to some of the best players, both present and past, but it is also known for attracting the biggest footballers in the game. The likes of Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, Roy Keane, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Cristiano Ronaldo, Virgil Van Dijk, and Eden Hazard are a few of the most notable names to have graced the English top-flight in its current format.
One key driving force behind the financial prowess of EPL clubs is the popularity of the league. This competition boasts a lucrative television rights deal, which was estimated to be worth $1.3BN domestically as of 2013-14. Broadcasters pay big bucks to bring the action to the fans live via TV, live streaming options, and on-demand services.
