About
ESPN2 USA history, coverage, features
ESPN2 is an American pay-TV channel dedicated to sports. It is owned by ESPN Inc., and it has been active since 1993. Available in over 80 million US households, the channel broadcasts in high definition, while maintaining a 480i feed for its SD version. Though it airs a lot of exclusive content, it has also shared coverage of many sporting events with parent network ESPN via simulcasts. It has mirrored content from sister network ESPN Deportes too, in the past, as a means to promote the Spanish-language station. Sports programs that have regularly made it into ESPN2’s programming lineup for years include long-running studio shows such as SportsCenter, which is produced in ESPN’s studios in Bristol, Connecticut, USA.
Much of the channel’s other programming slots are used for live coverage of major events from the worlds of American football (NFL), baseball (MLB), basketball (NBA), Formula 1, tennis, soccer and other sports. Whereas Men’s and Women’s professional sports receive a lot of airtime on ESPN2, college sports are usually given remarkable exposure as well. Games and programs may be taped to air at a later time and replayed afterward for viewers who missed the first delivery on television. Soccer leagues and tournaments that ESPN2 has gained the rights to, over the years, include the German Bundesliga, Italian Serie A and Coppa Italia, and even the UEFA Euro Qualifiers and Euro Championship Finals.
ESPN2 has also been a national broadcaster of the US Major League Soccer, National Women’s Soccer League, USL Championship and USL League One. It has additionally been the home for major international FIFA tournaments such as the FIFA U20 Men’s and Women’s World Cups, at one point or another in its history. ESPN2 is available to watch via the following satellite and IPTV.
Some cable providers such as Comcast Xfinity, Spectrum, Optimum TV and Prism TV may offer both SD and HD versions of ESPN2 through their various packages. Nonetheless, exact channel numbers on each of these providers may vary based on the location. Up until 2019, ESPN2 streams were available on the WatchESPN platform. Since the shutdown of the service, however, users can watch ESPN2 live online and on their tablets, smartphones or smart TVs using the official ESPN App. As with most American pay-TV networks, streaming access is limited to authenticated users who have the ESPN2 channel included in their TV package.
Other OTT platforms who have partnered with ESPN to offer high-quality streams of ESPN2 to their users include AT&T TV Now (formerly known as DirecTV Now), Hulu Live TV, PlayStation Vue, Sling TV and YouTube TV.
