Fußball-Club Bayern München, also known as FC Bayern, Bayern Munich, or Bayern, is a German professional football club based in Munich. Founded in 1900, the club is nicknamed “Die Roten” by its supporters and plays all its home games at the 75,000 seater Allianz Arena, a venue that opened in May 2005.
Bayern Munich by far is the most successful club in Germany, with more Bundesliga titles won than any other side. The team has also enjoyed a great deal of success in European competition, namely in the 1970s when it won three consecutive European titles and then again in the 21st century, when it became the second club to win a “Sextuple” during the 2019/2020 season, when it won its sixth Champions League trophy along with the Bundesliga and four other trophies that term.
Although the club’s major local rival is 1860 Munich, the gulf between the two sides - 1860 Munich has not always been able to remain in the top flight - means that the derby does not take place every season. In more recent times, a rivalry has emerged with Borussia Dortmund in a game nicknamed “Der Klassiker” due to Dortmund’s rise to prominence starting from the 1990s.
Unlike other major clubs, Bayern Munich is mostly led by a consortium of former players that make up a supervisory board along with a collection of other businessmen. The club’s footballing activities are primarily under the control of FC Bayern München AG, which is mostly owned by the club itself, while other companies, such as Adidas, Audi, and Allianz all own minority shares.
