About Primeira Liga

The Primeira Liga, also known as Liga PT, is the top level football competition in Portugal. The league is contested by 18 clubs each season, but the title race is dominated by the "Big Three": Benfica, Porto, and Sporting. These clubs have won a total of 82 titles between them, with Belenenses (1946) and Boavista (2001) being the only teams that could end their dominance.

For the first time in history, the Primeira Liga will see three clubs get relegated by the end of the season since club Gil Vicente has been awarded a place in next year’s league due to a tribunal decision. Regarding European tournaments, the Portuguese top flight’s champion will earn a spot in the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League group stage, while one more spot will be awarded to the runner-up, although they will have to enter the playoff round. Two more spots will be available to enter the UEFA Europa League’s qualifying rounds, although both teams will enter the preliminary rounds.

The 2017-18 Primeira Liga saw Porto ending Benfica’s four-year reign. Sergio Conceicao’s team ended the competition with the most points (88), most goals scored (82) and the least amount of goals conceded (18). The other side of the table saw Paços de Ferreira and Estoril get relegated, while Nacional and Santa Clara joined the league after earning their promotion from Liga Pro.

The 2018-19 Primeira Liga will begin on August 10, 2018, and is scheduled to end on May 19, 2019.

Did you know? Benfica and Porto are the only teams to win the league title without a loss, but the Dragons have accomplished that feat twice (2010-11 and 2012-13). Porto is also the only team capable of winning five Primeira Liga titles in a row (1994-1999).
