About Primeira Liga

The Primeira Liga, also known as Liga PT, is the top-level football competition in Portugal. The league is contested by 18 clubs each season, but the title race is dominated by the "Big Three": Benfica, Porto and Sporting. These clubs have won a total of 83 titles between them, with Belenenses (1946) and Boavista (2001) being the only teams that could end their dominance.

The Portuguese Primeira Liga works under a promotion-relegation system like most leagues in the world. Two teams are relegated to the LigaPro, while two sides are promoted to the Portuguese top-flight. The teams that were relegated after the 2018-19 season are: Chaves, Nacional and Feirense. Meanwhile, Gil Vicente, Famalicao and Pacos de Ferreira were the clubs that earned their spot in the Primeira Liga, in the only season to promote and relegate three teams after a court order granted Gil Vicente a spot in the Portuguese top-flight.

The Portuguese top-flight gives its champion a spot in the Group Stage of the UEFA Champions League, while the runners-up get to play that competition from the second playoff round onward. Three more teams get to play in the UEFA Europa League, although only one of them earns a spot in the Group Stage. The other two sides have to fight for it in the preliminary rounds.

The 2018-19 Primeira Liga season saw Benfica reclaiming their title, as they defeated Porto in one of the toughest title races in the history of Portuguese football. The Dragons concluded the tournament two points behind Benfica, and Sporting Lisbon concluded the competition in third place, thirteen points behind the league champions. Braga and Vitoria Guimaraes were the other two teams that earned tickets to play in European competitions, after finishing in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

The 2019-20 Primeira Liga season will kick off on August 9, 2019. The last game is scheduled to be played on May 17, 2020.

Did you know? Two recently promoted teams have made headlines for different reasons prior to the start of the Primeira Liga. Famalicao earned their spot in the Primeira Liga for the first time in 25 years, and the biggest story saw club Gil Vicente being reinstated in the Portuguese top-flight due to a court order. Gil Vicente had been relegated during the 2015-16 season, but since Primeira Liga decided to expand itself, Gil Vicente fought their case and asked to be handed their spot back. The court granted their wish and the Galos are back after a three-year battle.
