About Primeira Liga

The Primeira Liga, also known as Liga PT, is the top-level football competition in Portugal. The league is contested by 18 clubs each season, but the title race is dominated by the "Big Three": Benfica, Porto, and Sporting. The Portuguese Primeira Liga works under a promotion-relegation system like most leagues in the world. Two teams are relegated to the LigaPro, while two sides are promoted to the Portuguese top-flight. The Portuguese top-flight gives its champion a spot in the Group Stage of the UEFA Champions League, while the runners-up get to play that competition from the second playoff round onward. Three more teams get to play in the UEFA Europa League, although only one of them earns a spot in the Group Stage. The other two sides have to fight for it in the preliminary rounds. Like any of the top leagues in Europe, the Primeira Liga season kicks off in August and concluded in May of the following year.

Did you know? The 2018/2019 season is the only season in the Portuguese Primeira’s history in which three teams were promoted and relegated. The teams that were relegated are Chaves, Nacional, and Feirense. Meanwhile, Gil Vicente, Famalicao, and Pacos de Ferreira were the clubs that earned their spot in the top-flight league. Famalicao earned their spot in the Primeira Liga for the first time in 25 years, and the biggest story saw club Gil Vicente being reinstated in the Portuguese top-flight due to a court order. Gil Vicente had been relegated during the 2015-16 season, but since Primeira Liga decided to expand itself, Gil Vicente fought their case and asked to be handed their spot back. The court granted their wish and the Galos are back after a three-year battle.
