About Primera División
The Argentina Primera División, or Liga Profesional de Fútbol as it was named in 2020, is the top-tier football championship in the South American country. It is regarded as one of the best football leagues in Latin America, with some of the finest footballers in history emerging from this competition. It hosts two of the most popular teams in the world: Boca Juniors and River Plate. These teams have one of the fiercest rivalries in football, with the “Superclásico” stealing the headlines every season.
The competition was founded in 1891, making Argentina the first country outside the United Kingdom to establish a league. Early on in the Primera División, only clubs from Buenos Aires and Rosario participated, with other cities being granted entry as time passed. In 1931, the league turned professional.
Contrary to what takes place in several European leagues, the Argentine top-flight determines relegation through a coefficient system which is accomplished by calculating the average points tally over the previous three seasons. The three clubs with the worst coefficients are relegated to the Primera B Nacional category. Note: In 2020, relegation was suspended until 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A key member of CONMEBOL, the Primera División is given a handful of spots to play in international competitions. Being one of the major associations in the region, this championship is awarded six spots in the Copa Libertadores. However, one of these slots comes via the Copa Argentina, with the cup winner qualifying for that competition. Additionally, the Argentine top-flight hands out six Copa Sudamericana berths to their teams.
This competition is regarded as one of the best leagues not only in South America but the entire world. In fact, it was named one of the top 10 championships on the face of this earth in 2015. One huge attractor for the Primera División is the number of continental powerhouses it boasts such as Boca Juniors, River Plate, and Independiente. As a result, the Argentine top-flight racks in strong viewership and thus boasts an abundance of TV broadcasts, live streaming options, and on-demand services for its legion of supporters.
