About Liga MX

The Mexican Primera Division, also known as Liga MX, is Mexico's top division football league. It was founded in 1943. It sees 18 teams battle against each other to win one of two titles available. Each season, Mexican fans get to watch two tournaments while European clubs play only one. The first half of the season (Apertura tournament) runs from July through to December. The Mexican Clausura, the second tournament, starts in January and wraps up in May.

When the first 17 games are played, the best eight teams in the tournament enter a playoff stage where the winner of the competition is determined after six more matches. This playoff stage is known as Liguilla and it takes place twice per season, at the end of both the Apertura and Clausura regular seasons.

Added to that, one team is relegated to the Ascenso MX after the end of every Clausura tournament. NOTE: In April 2020, Liga MX president Enrique Bonilla announced that promotion and relegation both to and from the Mexican top-flight had been suspended for three years from that date.

This competition also hosts two of the most popular teams in North America: América and Guadalajara. América has based its success in the hiring of prominent footballers from around the world while Guadalajara has established its reputation by entering each tournament with players from Mexican descent. These teams play the “Clásico de Clásicos” at least once every six months in what is one of the most anticipated matches of each season. Cruz Azul and Pumas UNAM, along with América and Guadalajara, are frequently referred to as “Los Cuatro Grandes” (The Four Greats).

The Mexican Primera Division sends four teams to the CONCACAF Champions League each season. The Apertura and Clausura champions and runners-up qualify for North America’s premier club competition. However, should one or more teams reach the finals of both tournaments, then the vacant CCL ticket goes to the best performing side from one of the two tournaments.

Liga MX is one of the top leagues in not only North America but the entire world. In fact, according to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics, the Mexican top-flight ranked as the world’s 10th strongest league for the first decade of the 21st century (2001-2010). As a result, this competition remains popular among fans who tune in every week to watch the games live via TV broadcasts, live streaming options, and on-demand services.
