About Championship

The English Football League Championship (shortened as EFL Championship), or SkyBet Championship for sponsorship reasons, is the second-highest category in the English football league system behind the Premier League. This league is the wealthiest non-top flight football division in the world and the seventh richest league in Europe.

This league works under a promotion-relegation system. Each season, 24 teams battle to win a spot in the Premier League, as the EFL Championship grants three promotion spots to its members. The two top-ranked teams after each season earn a spot in the Premier League, while spots three to six battle for the final promotion spot in a playoff. On the other side of the table, the three lowest-ranked teams get relegated to the League One, or Third Division of the English Football League System.

The 2017-18 season saw Wolverhampton Wanderers claiming the league’s title and a spot in the Premier League. Cardiff City ended the season as runner-up, while Fulham claimed the final promotion spot after winning the playoff against Aston Villa, Middlesbrough and Derby County.

On the other side of the standings, Barnsley, Burton Albion, and Sunderland were relegated to League One, leaving their spots to Rotherham United, Wigan Athletic, and Blackburn Rovers. The three teams relegated from the Premier League were Stoke City, Swansea City, and West Brom.

The 2018-19 season of the EFL Championship kicks off on August 3, 2018. The final match is set to be played on May 5, 2019.

Did you know? Barnsley holds two EFL records, as they became the first team in history to win 1,000 games in this division. They are also the team with the highest number of games played in this division, with over 3,000 matches in the EFL Championship/Division One/Division Two.
