About Segunda División
Segunda División History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Segunda División Uruguaya, also known as Segunda División Profesional, is the second division of professional football in the South American country. It was established in 1942 to replace the Amateur División Intermedia.
Over the years, the Segunda División has changed its format to keep things interesting for their growing audiences. It is divided in two competitions: the Torneo Competencia and the Fase Regular. The first one sees all 14 teams being divided in two groups, where the winners of each group lock horns in a home-and-away series. The winner earns a spot in the promotion playoffs.
The Fase regular adds the games of the Torneo Competencia -except the final- and sees all teams facing each other twice. The two top teams after the round robin get promoted to the Primera División, while an additional spot is available to four teams that make the promotion playoffs.
In terms of relegation, Uruguay’s system to determine the teams that play a promotjon against Primera División Amateur consists of averaging the points earned divided by the games played in the past three years. The two teams with the lowest average play against two teams from the lower division on a home-and-away fixture. The winners keep their spot in the league or get relegated in case of a loss.
Coverage of this competition has been awarded to Uruguayan network Tenfield, who signed a broadcasting agreement until 2024. International streaming rights were awarded to GolTV, who earned streaming rights for this tournament until 2025.
