With one game left to play and both Manchester City and Liverpool one point ahead and a game in hand, Chelsea’s title race is virtually over. Having been eliminated in virtually every competition, Mourinho’s first season at Chelsea looks to be an empty one.

Considering the strength of the Blues’ squad, the depth of their bench and the value of its players, it seems impossible for a team of this quality to not win anything. However, a review of Chelsea’s games against “weaker” sides in the Premiership reveals why the London club has missed its chance.

Chelsea collected 3 points out of 15, against teams in the lower table.

Chelsea dropped too many points against teams like West Ham, Crystal Palace, Norwich, Sunderland, and Aston Villa. Sunderland and Norwich, both still fighting for relegation, both got away with points against the Blues, both at Stamford Bridge.

While it’s true that the Special One managed to win most games against the title contenders, he forgot to do the same against the small teams. Comparatively, City and the Reds, despite loosing to Chelsea, managed to make more points against smaller teams.

But as Mou said, even though he has one of the strongest and most expensive teams in the world, this was just a transitional season because the team is not ready yet. Some categorize this as an “excuse” some as a “promise”, only time will tell.
