Team descriptions

Argentina

Argentina come into this competition currently ranked as the number one side in the world - and it's no wonder, as La Albiceleste are the reigning Copa América holders as well as the World Cup winners. As such, they are by far the heavy favorites to successfully defend their title and win back to back trophies in this competition for the first time since 1991.

Copa América appearances: 43

Titles won: 15

Worst performance: Group Stage (1975, 1979, 1983)

2021 Copa América ranking: 1

Players to watch: Lionel Messi, Lautaro Martinez, Alejandro Garnacho, Julian Alvarez

Canada

Canada will be making their debut at a Copa América, but it looks like it very well could be a baptism by fire. Currently led by Jesse Marsch, Les Rouges have really struggled to make any sort of impact on the bigger stage, but it's safe to say that their players will certainly be doing their very best to at least try to cause some problems for some of their opponents in this group - and avoid leaving without at least a goal (or preferably a point or two) in hand.

Copa América appearances: 0

Titles won: 0

Worst performance: N/A

2021 Copa América ranking: N/A

Players to watch: Alphonso Davies, Cyle Larin, Jonathan David

Peru

Peru are no strangers to this competition and have consistently done solidly enough - albeit they have not won it since 1975. La Bicolor did finish in third place during the 2011 and 2015 iterations of the Copa América and as runners-up in 2019 and will certainly be aiming to try to have another strong run this summer. However, that may be a lot easier said than done, especially as they are expected to face some tough competition from Chile to secure a knockout round berth from Group A.

Copa América appearances: 33

Titles won: 2

Worst performance: Group Stage (1987, 1989, 1991, 1995)

2021 Copa América ranking: 4th

Players to watch: Paolo Guerrero, Gianluca Lapadula, Pedro Gallese

Chile

Chile really made major waves in 2015 and 2016 when they won back to back Copa América titles, but since then, have failed to recapture some of that same shine. That being said, they do have some quality players still within their ranks, and could pose a major threat to many sides this summer - especially if they are able to successfully pip Peru to secure one of the two quarter-finals berths from Group A.

Copa América appearances: 40

Titles won: 2

Worst performance: Group Stage (1975, 1983, 1989, 1993, 1995, 1997, 2004)

2021 Copa América ranking: 7th

Players to watch: Alexis Sanchez, Ben Brereton Díaz, Claudio Bravo, Eduardo Vargas

Must-watch games

Naturally, given that it is the tournament opener, many eyes will be on the Argentina vs Canada match taking place on June 20th - especially as this could possibly be Lionel Messi's last major international tournament with Argentina. Then, on June 25th, it's on to what could be a very intriguing clash featuring Chile vs. Argentina. Finally, on June 29th, it's a double-header featuring Argentina vs Peru and Canada vs. Chile.

Group prediction

Given that Argentina are coming into this competition as not only the reigning FIFA World Cup champions but also the reigning holders of the Copa América, it is safe to say that La Albieceleste are the favorites to top Group A. Meanwhile, Peru and Chile will be doing their best to secure a runners-up spot, while Canada will be determined to avoid just making up the numbers.

1. Argentina

2. Chile

3. Peru

4. Canada
