Group B permutations – who will qualify in first and second position?
Analytically, only one more semi-final ticket is up for grabs at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup. Although it looks to be going Uruguay’s way, AFCON 2013 champions Nigeria hold the daring dream of creating an upset this Sunday.
Brazil and Italy are already through and so are Spain – virtually. Looking at the goal difference factor in Group B, it would sound absurd to believe that La Furia Roja could finish in third position in the table. Mathematically, though, this remains a possibility.
Ahead of Matchday 3, the Spaniards count 6 points with 12 goals scored and only one allowed. Nigeria are second with three points and a (+4) goal difference. At this point, the Super Eagles might regret not hitting many more goals against Tahiti in their opening game.
Although the Uruguayans commence Matchday 3 in third, they are expected to climb into the qualification zone at Nigeria’s expense at the end of the day. Luis Suarez, Diego Forland and Edison Cavani are very much confident of trouncing Tahiti mercilessly if this is what could assure them a ticket to the Confederations Cup 2013 semi-finals.
Remarkably, all three teams could finish on six points in Group B. The section’s winner will get to face Italy in the Last 4 while the runner-up will meet hosts Brazil. In fact, Stephen Keshi’s players are under extreme pressure to claim maximum points against Spain and finish the night with a higher goal difference than Uruguay. How possible is this?
