About
BBC Red Button history, coverage, features
BBC Red Button is a digital interactive television service owned by the BBC, which broadcasts its content in the UK. The service was first launched back in September of 1999 as BBC Text, and it was later rebranded as BBCi in 2001. The service kept that name until 2008, when it acquired the name BBC Red Button. The “red button” denomination is a reference to remote controls for digital televisions and set-top boxes.
BBC Text developed what some refer to as an early form of on-demand interactive television, which was named Enhanced TV. Such broadcasts included additional information of player profiles, match information and more.
The service’s rebranding in 2008 was an effort by the BBC to drop the “i” from its digital service. Nevertheless, the name BBC iPlayer pays tribute to this service with its branding. The service was rebranded as BBC Red Button + in 2015.
Speaking about sports, BBC Red Button has provided extensive coverage of Premier League and the Olympic Games. In fact, the service provided up to 24 live streams for fans to keep track of all competitions during the 2012 games held in London. The service provided a similar approach to the 2016 games, but there were only eight video streams available.
BBC Red Button may be available on most digital television platforms. While an HD feed was introduced in 2012, the service is not permanent in all cable companies. Check availability of the HD or SD feed with your pay-tv carrier.
