About

BBC Red Button history, coverage, features

The BBC Red Button is an extension of the BBC’s programming in the United Kingdom, typically used for live sport when simultaneous events are taking place. The service was first launched in 1999, and back then, it was known as BBC Text. In 2001, it was rebranded as BBCi before becoming known as the BBC Red Button in 2008.

To access the BBC Red Button, users used to have to click the red button on their TV remote controls when watching the BBC. In more recent times, the red button has been available online through the BBC iPlayer. BBC iPlayer is the BBC’s online streaming service, which is available through a web browser and a mobile phone app.

Live football has frequently been shown on the BBC Red Button in years gone by. It has often been used for live matches during international football tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championships. All programming on the BBC Red Button is in English.
