Can the Netherlands take a huge step towards the Round of 16 with a win over Australia?

If their opening performance is anything to go by, the Dutch are set to light up this World Cup. Prior to the tournament, very few mentioned them in the same breath as Spain. This was perhaps right; on the day of the meeting, the Dutch were on a different level. Louis Van Gaal's tactics worked to perfection. He set his team up in a 5-3-2 and handed Robin Van Persie and Arjen Robben licenses to roam. The two caused havoc on the day. The same Robben who had failed to beat Casillas twice in the 2010 World Cup final mercilessly scored two goals.

A point which is not mentioned is Spain actually led the Dutch. The two teams went into half-time on even terms following Van Persie's header. Only in the second half did the Dutch reveal their true colors. They pressed Spain incessantly and counterattacked brutally. Their passing was crisp; the Dutch often completely bypassed the Spanish midfield by playing long balls over the top from defense to attack. Daley Blind was a hit for the Dutch from the wing as well, playing in Van Persie and Robben with marvelous passes.

The most wonderful part of the match was perhaps to see the joy the Dutch team played with. While the likes of Van Persie, Wesley Sneijder and Robben are seasoned campaigners, the latter two winning almost every major honor at club level, plenty of the Dutch team are newcomers. Van Gaal is a man who knows how to pick out the best young talent. Germany's hat-trick hero, Thomas Müller's career blossomed under him at Bayern for example.

They will be playing an Australia side which gave Chile its fair share of problems next. Australia showed they have enough grit to ask one or two questions of the Dutch in their 3-1 loss to the Chileans. The Netherlands' defense will have to be able to cope with Tim Cahill for one. Van Gaal is likely to name the same line-up. He tends to stick with winning formulas almost all the time.

Can the Dutch virtually book a spot in the next round by beating Australia?
