About
ITV 1 UK history, coverage, features
The Independent Television service, or ITV, is a free-to-air channel owned by STV. It was originally conformed by three different regions (London, the Midlands and the North of England), but now operates as one feed. It was launched on September 22, 1955 and has continually been named as the most popular commercial television channel in the UK. ITV is sub-divided in twelve different regions, which add their content to the regular feed provided by the content aired in London. ITV is available to watch in England, southern Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands, along with other territories via satellite TV.
ITV has aired some of the most watched shows in UK history, which go from soap operas, general information shows, reality shows, children’s programs, and more. The network has also produced and aired breakfast shows and a now-defunct schools programming.
This channel has also made sports one of the cornerstones of its programming, with top-notch events available on its screen. In the past, ITV has aired club football including the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League, the FA Cup, and La Liga. Furthermore, ITV has also broadcast international games and tournaments where the English National Team has performed, such as the FIFA World Cup (rights co-owned with the BBC), the UEFA Euro, and all of England’s international games. Some of the former football players who have worked for ITV covering football include Roy Keane, Gary Neville, Patrice Evra, Henrik Larsson, Ian Wright, and Emmanuel Petit, to name a few.
Added to its extended football coverage, ITV has also covered motor sport, boxing events, horse racing events, darts competitions, cycling, tennis tournaments, snooker and more.
ITV is available to watch on the British free-to-air feed, but it is also on the grids of most major cable, satellite, and IPTV service providers in the UK. Pay-tv carriers may offer users the chance to watch this channel on either SD or HD, but you may want to check local listings and schedules for further details regarding the channel number and availability of the service with your pay-tv carrier.
