About UEFA Euro Qualifying
The UEFA Euro Qualifying or the UEFA European Championship Qualifying is the qualifying stage for the UEFA European Championship, commonly referred to as the Euros. UEFA’s national association football teams compete to earn a ticket to the tournament, which is held once every four years, with the qualifications taking place during the two years preceding the finals.
The format of the qualification round has undergone several changes over the years. For the inaugural European Championship in France 1960, only 17 nations participated in the qualifying stage for four tickets to the finals. Until England 1996, no more than 10 countries could qualify for the Euros and qualifiers for the first two European Championships followed a knockout-style only. Italy 1980 saw the introduction of the hosting rights, with the hosts being named in advance and granted automatic qualification for the first time -- previously, one nation from the already-qualified teams would be chosen to stage the Euros.
The UEFA Euro 2020 Qualifying saw automatic qualification for the host(s) revoked for the first time since its introduction as hosting rights were awarded to 12 cities from 12 different countries. The qualifiers for the 16th edition of the European Championship were heavily affected by the coronavirus pandemic as UEFA were forced to postpone the playoffs, which was determined by the UEFA Nations League, due to the COVID-19 crisis. Additionally, Euro 2020 had to be suspended until the summer of 2021 due to the virus.
