About Primera Division
The Chilean First Division, also known as the Primera Division, is the top-tier football championship in Chile. It was founded in 1933 and is considered by experts around the world as one of the most competitive leagues in South American football and in America.
As mentioned above, this tournament saw the light of day in 1933. In the first edition, the eight founding members -- Unión Española, Badminton, Colo-Colo, Audax Italiano, Green Cross, Morning Star, Magallanes, and Santiago National -- contested for the title. A crucial victory over Colo-Colo saw Magallanes lift the inaugural title. In 1934, the second edition, the Chilean First Division underwent an expansion. Regardless, the reigning champion successfully defended their crown.
This competition works under a promotion-relegation system with the Primera División B, the second most relevant football competition in the country. However, relegation has not always occurred in the Chilean top-flight.
The league changed its format in 2017. Before that, the Chilean championship was played from August to May of the subsequent year, but the Chilean Football Federation determined to go back to playing their tournament in just one calendar year, starting the season in the latter days of January and concluding it in the first half of December. A total of 16 teams play two games against each other (30 games total) to determine the winner.
Added to the title, this tournament grants access to continental competitions. The top three teams make it to the Copa Libertadores and the teams ranked from fourth to seventh earn a spot in the Copa Sudamericana of the subsequent year.
