About Segunda liga

Segunda liga History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Liga Portugal 2 is the second most relevant football league in Portugal. It was launched back in 1990 under the name Segunda Divisao de Honra, and it has evolved into one of the most relevant leagues in its category across Europe. It is directly related to the Primeira Liga and operated by the Liga Portuguesa de Futebol Profissional.

Over the years, Liga Portugal 2 has operated under a promotion-relegation system, offering two spots in the Primeira Liga to the two best teams in each season, and one additional option to be promoted after winning a promotion playoff, which is played against the team ranked 16th in the same Primeira Liga season. On the other hand, two teams are relegated to Liga 3, while one more enters a relegation playoff against the third best team from that competition.

Liga Portugal 2 has established itself as a competitive second-tier category, one that is very difficult to win. Twenty-one different teams have won the competition since it was created, with only six of those being able to win it more than once.

Coverage of this tournament in Portugal has been available on different platforms, including Sport TV, Benfica TV, and Porto Canal. The team channels earned streaming rights until the end of the 2025-26 season, while Sport TV signed a broadcast and streaming deal until 2027.
