Switzerland beat the eventual winners but failed to progress from the group stages in 2010. Can they do better this time?

For Switzerland, a chance to change the memories of the past has arrived. Four years ago, the Swiss started off with a win over World Champions Spain. They held all the cards following the opening round of the tournament. After three rounds were played, Switzerland had handed over all the cards to Chile. The Swiss went home; they have come back once more.

Ecuador will point out that the Swiss at least qualified for the finals in 2010 because they did not. Ecuador did well in their previous participation in 2006, making it into the last 16. They have a very intelligent coach in Reinaldo Rueda. Rueda however will have to find a way past a legend of the game, Ottmar Hitzfeld. Hitzfeld is the only man to have coached two different German sides to UEFA Champions League glory. He remains a firm favorite in Bavaria.

Hitzfeld will bow out after this match. He will definitely be hoping that he is able to do so on a high. The draw has not been incredibly unkind to Switzerland. They have been handed a talented but disjointed French side and minnows Honduras aside from Ecuador. Qualifying will be tricky but not extremely hard. Four years ago, qualification seemed not too difficult after the first match though and the Swiss still failed to progress.

Hitzfeld will have to choose his striker wisely. He took the misfiring Haris Seferovic with him. He has the up and coming Josip Drmic in his squad. He also has Mario Gavranovic and Admir Mehmedi. Hitzfeld opted to leave the experience of Eren Derdiyok at home. Now, he has a really big decision to make.

The Swiss have to prove they are more than just a relatively tough group of players and Xherdan Shaqiri. They are a talented side which can definitely prove a few doubters wrong and shock others if they believe in themselves. They might even take a leaf out of Basel's book; the Swiss champions were responsible for the elimination of Manchester United from the UEFA Champions League not too long ago.

Can the Swiss rise to the challenge?
