Two neighbors from the Iberian Peninsula will go head to head on Thursday, in the first of two matches that should be highly entertaining. Watch live on Fox Sports 2 USA as Porto looks to take an advantage with them to Spain.

Preview: Porto try to bounce back after a defeat to Nacional

In comparison to what has been normal for Porto over the last 10 or 20 years, their current campaign has been mediocre at best. They find themselves eight points off second placed Sporting CP, with rivals SL Benfica top of the league, 15 points clear.

The Dragons defeated the league leaders mid-week in the first leg of the Taça de Portugal quarterfinals, but they will now have to get past Sevilla.

Having been defeated in their last domestic match away to Nacional 2-1, interim manager Luis Castro is calling on his players to have their sights set on goal.

“It’s a huge match for us,” Castro told reporters. “Everyone at the club wants to go through to the next round. Sevilla have shown their value as a team, they have had a solid season and have reached this stage of the competition, which makes them a good team.”

“Still, we are focused on our game, because we know that if we play our game and have our fans behind us, we will get a good result,” he added.

Porto’s problems this season have come mainly away from home. With just one defeat at home in their last 17 matches, the reigning Portuguese champions are a force to be reckoned with at the Estádio do Dragão. They will need to take full advantage of that on Thursday, in order to give themselves a cushion heading back to Spain.

Even a one or two goal lead may not be enough to see off the Andalusians.

They were defeated 2-0 in the first leg of their meeting with Betis in the previous round, but managed to get through after a penalty-shootout.

Portuguese goalkeeper Beto will be in charge of keeping the Portuguese side off the score-sheet. He has already spent time in the Portuguese League, so he will have some decent knowledge of who and what he is up against on Thursday.

“It’s a very special game for me, but the most important thing for me is that I’m an option tomorrow,” Beto told reporters on Wednesday. “Porto are used to winning, with a lot of heart, but Sevilla have got Europe used to our good performances and tomorrow we will do our best to get a positive result.”

The hosts should have a full squad to choose from on Thursday, while Unai Emery is dealing with suspensions to Stephane Mbia and Federico Fazio. Sebastian Cristoforo and Denis Cheryshev are injured and unavailable, but Portuguese defender Daniel Carriço has recovered from an injury and will be available.
