Preview: Stage set for bad boy Suarez to wow the crowd again
As the intense Christmas period arrives, Liverpool supporters have received just the kind of boost they need. The club’s most important player, Luis Suarez, has pledged his future to the club, killing off huge interest from Arsenal and Real Madrid.
According to rumours, the Gunners and Los Blancos were set to rock the January transfer window by rekindling the Luis Suarez saga. However, the Uruguyan has proven that football at Anfield is his focus this season.
“We have some great players and the team is growing and improving all the time,” the striker declared after finalizing his new £200K-a-week contract.
“I believe I can achieve the ambitions of winning trophies and playing at the very highest level with Liverpool. My aim is to help get us there as quickly as possible.”
So far, so good. The Merseyside Reds have not been perfect in the Premier League this term but they have considerably improved compared to last season. After 16 games, back in the 2012/13 EPL campaign, Everton’s city rivals had gathered only 22 points from 5 wins, 4 defeat and 7 draws, scoring 22 and conceding 20.
But ahead of Matchday 17 this year, Liverpool count 33 points. Daniel Sturridge’s heroic displays before his injury and Luis Suarez’s 17 goals in 11 matches have helped the team net 39 goals in the competition. Only Manchester City (47) have scored more goals and only Arsenal (35 points) seat above them.
Cardiff City, meanwhile, have been doing just enough to stay safe. They are four points above the drop zone, in 15th position, above West Bromwich Albion (whom they beat last weekend) and West Ham United. All odds are against Cardiff to pull up an upset at Anfield in Saturday’s lunch time kick-off.
Indeed, it would take something special for the visitors to prevent Luis Suarez from celebrating his new contract with another masterpiece.
