Preview: An easy challenge for Mourinho?
Steaua Bucharest will end their 2013/14 UEFA Champions League campaign rooted at the bottom of Group E. This was confirmed on Matchday 5 when they drew with Schalke 04, losing all hopes of at least qualifying for the Europa League. The Romanians will play for nothing more but pride at Stamford Bridge this Wednesday.
Manager Reghecampf expressed his frustration, stating:
“It is a pity we are in this situation. Initially I was hoping this would be an important game where we had the chance to qualify for the next round or the Europa League, but of course now the priority is the domestic league – that is not to say we will not give everything tomorrow though.
“We know it will be very difficult because Chelsea want to finish top of the group and they know they have to win to do that. But I just hope we give them a good game.”
For Chelsea, the situation is different. Despite going down 1-0 in Switzerland in the previous round of fixtures, the 2011/12 Champions League winners sealed their passage into the Round of 16 with 9 points.
What remains at stake in Group E is the top spot as the Blues lead second-placed FC Basel by one point and third-placed Schalke 04 by two points.
“We have to win, not just to finish first but to have the good feeling to win at home and finish with 12 points,” coach Jose Mourinho told the press on Tuesday.
