Tigres UANL vs América - Team news

The home team returned to winning ways after losing their unbeaten status against Guadalajara two weeks ago with a convincing yet narrow win against Necaxa. Tigres have won two out of their last four across all competitions, with one goalless draw and two one-nil wins in that run. While the team does not seem to have any side effects following Diego Cocca's exit to coach Mexico, the team's potential seems to be greater than the one they have shown under coach Marco Ruíz, who needs to defeat América in a convincing way to keep his team's supporters beside him.

América seemed to have found a regular lineup prior to last week's defeat, where Pachuca exposed their flaws in defense and even caused massive insults against goalkeeper Oscar Jiménez and right back Miguel Layún. With that in mind, coach Fernando Ortiz has announced that neither of them will start against Tigres, in an effort to shake things up and to go back to winning ways. Luckily for Ortiz, right winger Alejandro Zendejas is ready to play after a month's absence, but it is yet to be seen if the USMNT player will be given a starting nod.

Here is the list of absences for both sides ahead of this game.

Tigres UANL: David Ayala (injured).

América: Brian Rodríguez (doubtful).

Tigres UANL vs América: Head-to-head

- The most recent game between these teams ended with América claiming a 2-1 victory back in September.

- Tigres have not defeated América since November 28, 2019. That game ended in a 2-1 win for the blue and gold.

- América make it to Estadio Universitario on a seven-game winning streak against Tigres, which includes three wins when playing away from home.

- América have outscored Tigres UANL 16-5 in their last seven games.

- This will be the first game for Tigres UANL's coach Marco Ruíz against América.

- América's boss Fernando Ortíz has seen his team win both of his previous matches against Tigres.

Tigres UANL vs América - Standings prior to this match

Tigres are second in Liga MX, and only a loss combined with a massive win by Pachuca could seem them drop from that spot. Meanwhile, América are sixth following their loss to Pachuca last week, and a win here could see them returning to the top four. Nevertheless, Los Tuzos and Pachuca could leapfrog them on Sunday if they are capable of winning their respective matches.
