About
Canal 5 Televisa history, coverage, features
Canal 5 is a Mexican free-to-air television channel owned and operated by Grupo Televisa. It was launched on August 18, 1952 as a regional channel, but Televisa changed that as demand for more television channels in the country increased.
Over the years, Canal 5 has been used to reach younger audiences, with children’s programming, animated shows, TV series, and movies playing a major role in its programming. Added to that, Canal 5 has increased the number of movies, international shows, and in-house productions such as reality shows.
The channel has also played a key role in the company’s sports coverage over the years. Some of the sports aired on this channel have included football, American football, ice hockey, and boxing. Canal 5 has also been used to cover global events such as the FIFA World Cup and the Summer Olympic Games. Friendly and competitive games featuring the Mexican National Football Team have also been covered by this channel.
Speaking about football, Canal 5 has mostly covered domestic competitions such as the Liga MX and the Copa MX. Other competitions such as the Campeón de Campeones and the Super Copa MX have also been covered on this channel. International football fans have also been able to watch UEFA Champions League games, UEFA Europa League matches, UEFA Euro clashes, and Copa América games on this channel.
Canal 5 started airing its content in Standard Definition, but just like their sister channel Las Estrellas, the network embraced HD technology long before it was mandatory for all Mexican channels to provide an HD feed. Users who are not able to access HD technology can get a hold of a downscaled version of Canal 5’s HD feed if necessary.
