About FA Cup
The FA Cup is the world's oldest association football competition. The tournament is now in its 139th edition, consisting of six preliminary rounds and eight additional ties that lead to the tournament’s final.
The tournament has endured some changes since its inception in 1871. One of those changes has to do with the attendance numbers, as the first-ever FA Cup final was witnessed live by 2,000. In later years, the final of the competition has welcomed as many 86,000 fans at Wembley Stadium.
This competition welcomes all football teams from England and Wales. Up to 736 teams have been invited to participate in the 2019-20 competition, with the first KO rounds seeing amateur teams fighting for a spot in the main draw. Up to the fifth round, games can be replayed in the event of a draw, but a level match after that stage of the competition will be decided in extra time or in a penalty shootout.
The winner of this competition earns access to two more tournaments: the UEFA Europa League and the FA Community Shield. If the team that wins the competition has already qualified to the UEFA Champions League or to the UEFA Europa League, then the spot will be awarded to the highest-ranked Premier League team without a ticket to play European competitions the following year.
Did you know? In the 2018-19 FA Cup final, Manchester City matched a 116-year-old record for the biggest win in the competition’s final match with their 6-0 win over Watford. That record belonged to Bury, who defeated Derby County with a similar score back in 1903.
