It was initially launched on September 15, 1988 as a test channel, but its official launch came on March 31, 1989.
ESPN Africa is one of the geo-specific channels launched by the network. It is a joint venture between the Walt Disney Company and Hears Communications. Its area of influence is the Sub-Saharan Africa, and it started airing its content in English, French, and Portuguese, but the latter was eventually dropped from the general programming.
