The NWSL Challenge Cup is an annual Super Cup competition for women’s soccer in the USA. Founded in 2020 and organized by the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), the event is contested by the NWSL Champion and the NWSL Shield winner, the team that earns the most points during the regular season.
Originally founded as a one-off tournament to reintroduce domestic soccer to the USA following a break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NWSL later extended the competition as a League Cup for the next three seasons. In late 2023, the tournament was restructured into a Super Cup format, where the NWSL Champion and the NWSL Shield winner face off in a single match. If one team wins both titles, the Challenge Cup becomes a rematch of the previous season’s NWSL Championship game.
The NWSL Challenge Cup is a curtain-raiser for the NWSL season, with the first Super Cup edition taking place on March 15, 2024. The San Diego Wave, the 2023 NWSL Shield winner, claimed the title by defeating NWSL Champion NJ/NY Gotham FC 1-0. Houston Dash, Portland Thorns, and North Carolina Courage won the first three editions in consecutive seasons.
The 2024 edition made history as the first NWSL Challenge Cup streamed live on Amazon Prime Video. This event marked the beginning of the NWSL's landmark four-year agreements with CBS Sports, ESPN, Prime Video, and Scripps Sports to enhance the distribution of all NWSL-affiliated competitions through linear and digital streaming platforms.
