After securing a move to Old Trafford in the last few moments of the transfer window, it remains to be seen whether the Belgian international is the man the club has been seeking for quite a while.
By all means, the recently concluded summer transfer window has been the most frustrating windows for Manchester United to date. The Red Devils were interested in almost every midfielder above the 30 million euros mark but in the end, the primary targets either ended up staying at their current clubs or chose to move elsewhere.

In the end, it was Belgium international Marouane Fellaini, who signed for the club in the dying moments of the transfer window. The midfielder has been given the number 31 shirt and will be looking to be the answer to a problem that has so far, remain unresolved.

Despite being one of the biggest clubs in England and Europe, United’s midfield seems to be its Achilles heel. The midfield problem was so severe and obvious that Sir Alex Ferguson was forced to call Paul Scholes back from retirement.

In past, the Red Devils have invested quite a lot of money in midfielders who either never lived up to expectations (like Juan Sebastian Veron, Anderson) or spent more time on the treatment table than on the pitch like Owen Hargreaves. Though Michael Carrick has finally come off age, the England international was never going to be the answer to the midfield crisis.

And after spending 27.5 million pounds on Fellaini, one can only hope that the former Everton man is finally the one they have been searching for ages.

The Belgian will definitely have a huge impact at the club because he will offer to his new side something that it has been craving for. Since the departure of Roy Keane, Red Devils have lacked a hard man who can bully his way around the midfield. Keane was never replaced and in his place, came in more creative players. The last man who was close to Keane’s attitude in the midfield was Paul Scholes who was never really the best tackler out there.

With the retirement of Scholes, United sorely needed a midfield enforcer, someone with the physique and ability to boss his way around. That is something every big club has. Bayern Munich have Bastian Schweinsteiger and Manchester City have Yaya Toure.

Although he might not be as technically gifted as the aforementioned players, Fellaini is a very hardworking player and has all the attributes to become a big star. Also, he has the tendency to score goals and dominate set-pieces which makes him a real asset.

Last season, Fellaini accumulated 9 yellow cards and averaged around four defensive actions every game which means that he has the tendency to get stuck in whenever necessary.

However, the player’s disciplinary record is something that may worry David Moyes. Due to his inclination to go gung-ho at times, Fellaini is never too far away from either being wound up or getting sent off.
All in all, Manchester United have got a very good player on their hands. However, in past many good midfielders came in and never managed to shine the way they should have.

The same might not be applicable to Fellaini who has already shown that playing against the big teams in the Premier League does not worry him or affects his performances – a boon for Moyes who would be praying that his first marquee signing gives him a reason to smile at the end of the season.
