Chelsea are the only team from England’s Big Six to have kick-started 2013 with defeat. On New Year’s Day, Spurs, Manchester United and Manchester City all enjoyed convincing wins while Arsenal secured nothing more than a draw against Southampton.
On Wednesday, the Anfield crowd were offered a spectacle as Liverpool, powered by captain Steven Gerrard and striker Luis Suarez, demolished Sunderland. The odd result happened at Stamford Bridge as former Chelsea boy Shaun Wright-Phillips forced the hosts to their first ever defeat to Queens Park Rangers in 30 years.
Before Matchday 21, coach Rafael Benitez declared that Chelsea’s chase for the English Premier League title was well and truly on. This warning – aimed at league leaders Manchester United and champions Manchester City – can certainly be retracted now. However, all is not lost for the Blues. They can throw all their energy into defending their FA Cup title. This begins on Saturday with a tricky trip away to Southampton.
