Preview

Liverpool are preparing for the penultimate match of their season, with the Merseyside giants traveling to Aston Villa on Monday in what promises to be an exciting display. Villa Park will be the venue for this 3 p.m. ET showdown as both sides go in search of the three points – though for different reasons.

Monday's game is not simply Liverpool's penultimate match of the season. It is also Jurgen Klopp's penultimate game in charge of Liverpool as the highly-rated German manager prepares to step down as Anfield boss this summer.

Unfortunately, Klopp will only have a Carabao Cup trophy to show in his final season in charge as Manchester City's 4-0 win over Fulham on Saturday mathematically ended their Premier League title race, with the Reds sitting seven points behind Guardiola's men with only two matches left.

Their run of two wins out of six in the Premier League in the month of April ultimately cost Salah and Co. the title, with the Merseyside giants also crashing out of the FA Cup and the UEFA Europa League in the quarterfinal stage earlier this year.

Liverpool suffered defeats against Crystal Palace and Everton while drawing with Manchester United and West Ham during this run as profligacy in front of goal seeped into Klopp's frontline. Regardless, the Merseyside giants have secured a third-placed finish, thus returning to the UEFA Champions League after a year's absence, and should give it their all to finish the season on a strong note.

Klopp's final game will be a home clash against Wolves but the Reds must first overcome Aston Villa this Monday to cross the 80-point threshold with a game to spare. The last time these two sides met, Liverpool won 3-0, and as a result, the question on everyone's mind is whether they can repeat this feat.

Aston Villa, on the other hand, have something to fight for. With two games left in their season, Unai Emery's men are fighting tooth and nail to secure a top-four finish and – subsequently – UEFA Champions League qualification ahead of nearest rivals Tottenham.

The Birmingham side currently sit fourth in the table and boast a four-point lead over Spurs. While this hands them a huge advantage, Ollie Watkins and Co. will face a tough test in their final two fixtures and will need to be at their best.

Their clash with Liverpool is first on the agenda but after that comes their showdown with Crystal Palace on the final day. Given the form the Eagles have been in under Oliver Glasner, led by Micael Olise and Eberechi  Eze, that should also be a tough test for the Lions.

Meanwhile, Tottenham will face Man City and Sheffield in their final two fixtures, meaning it will not be a walk in the park for the North London side either. Regardless, Emery's men must win their games and secure an impressive ticket to Europe's premier club competition.

Unfortunately, Aston Villa's form has nosedived recently. The hosts are on a four-game winless run, drawing at home to Chelsea and losing away to Brighton in the league while suffering defeats both home and away to Olympiacos in the UEFA Europa Conference League semifinals. Their UEFA Europa Conference League exit was painful as Villa had a great opportunity to end their 42-year wait for a European title. Nonetheless, Monday presents them with an opportunity to bounce back.

Team news

Aston Villa: Youri Tielemans, Alex Moreno, and Nicolo Zaniolo are all doubts for this tie. Meanwhile, Morgan Rogers is injured and joins Emi Buendia, Tyrone Mings, Boubacar Kamara, and Jacob Ramsey on the sidelines.

Liverpool: Diogo Jota, Ben Doak, Bobby Clark, Thiago Alcantara, and Joel Matip will all miss this game. Meanwhile, Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott will be hoping to start.
