About Optus Sport

Optus Sport is an Australian sports channel owned by Optus Group in 2016. The channel broadcasts the English Premier League after it won the broadcasting rights from the previous broadcaster Foxtel. Optus Sport is known for its sports rights to compete with Foxtel.

Optus started its launchinglaunched as Optus Television until Optus was rebranded as Optus Sports in 2002. However, in 2009 Optus Television stopped its services. In November 2015, Optus obtained the rights to broadcast the English Premier League in Australia until the end of 2018/19 season. It was also announced in 2016 that the channel was available on Fetch TV from Optus and also on it’s app and website, equipped with satellite coverage for those with limited internet speed. In addition, it was reported that one match per round would be sub-licensed to a Free-to-Air cChannel. The government channel SBS reported that they had their FIFA World Cup license traded.

Yet, Optus’s rights to broadcast English Premier League didn’t please everyone, as most still thought that Foxtel and other telecommunication providers have a better network infrastructure than Optus. The In the first three months the broadcaster waswas flooded with complaints from it’s subscribers and discontents. Moreover, fans were disappointed that SBS offered its rights to the 2018 FIFA World Cup, yet they still broadcast Australian matches and one of the knock-out phases.

Besides the English Premier League, Optus also broadcasts other soccer tournaments live like in 2016, they broadcast thesuch as the 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup, the 2016 AFF U-19 Youth Championsip. Optus currently , and Optus hasholds the rights to broadcast the upcoming FIFA World Cup in 2018.

Optus has 10 channels, and Optus 1 is one of the official broadcasters of English Premier League for 24/7 while Optus 2 and Optus 3 offer live coverage of soccer and cricket. Optus 3 broadcast the 2016 AFF Suzuki and also the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
