Preview

UEFA Champions League football returns this midweek, with Barcelona taking to the field on Tuesday for Matchday 5 of the competition. The Spanish giants welcome Porto, their nearest rivals in the race to win the group, as Xavi's men are desperate to return to winning ways in Europe.

The Blaugrana currently sit top of the table in their group. However, things could turn tricky for the Catalan heavyweights thanks to their most recent result.

Barcelona were a victory away from securing progression to the round of 16 when they visited Shakhtar Donetsk in the previous round. However, Lewandowski and Co. came away with a shocking 1-0 defeat and are now level on points with Porto.

Xavi's men boast the advantage. However, that defeat to Shakhtar was just one of many disappointing performances from Barcelona in recent weeks, with the Spanish giants failing to win four out of their last five matches.

The hosts enter this game following their frustrating 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano in the league, with an 82nd-minute own goal from the opposition rescuing a point for Xavi's men. The Spanish giants haven't won a game by more than a one-goal margin since thrashing Antwerp 5-0 in mid-August and were below par in their last three victories over Deportivo Alaves, Real Sociedad, and Shakhtar Donetsk.

As a result, pressure is mounting on the manager. With disgruntled voices increasing by the week, Xavi cannot afford a slip-up as it could put Barcelona's UEFA Champions League hopes and the Spaniard's future at the club in question.

Meanwhile, Porto enter this game with aspirations of their own as the Portuguese giants could confirm their spot in the round of 16 in this tie. A win would be necessary if Shakhtar beat Antwerp while a draw would suffice if the Ukrainian heavyweights suffer a defeat.

The Dragons are currently level on points with group leaders Barcelona. However, the home side boast the advantage due to their previous encounter over a month ago, in which Porto lost 1-0.

Since then,  Sérgio Conceição's men have gone on to win all but one of the eight subsequent games while conceding only three goals. Nonetheless, they remain third in their league and will hope to turn their season around with a win against Barcelona.

Team news

Barcelona: Ter Stegen, who has been dealing with a back issue, misses out on this tie while Gavi is a long-term absentee after suffering an ACL tear during the international break. However, Sergi Roberto has returned to the squad while De Jong could make his UEFA Champions League return after featuring in the Rayo Vallecano draw.

Porto: The visitors are without Samuel Portugal, Ivan Marcano, Gabriel Veron, and Ivan Jaime. Meanwhile, question marks linger over Wendell.
