Broadcast Rights

Competitions available on Movistar+

Movistar’s exclusive UEFA Champions League rights in Spain have been extended until 2027 following a three-year deal. The pay-TV provider, owned by telecommunications conglomerate Telefonica, reached an agreement with UEFA from the 2024-25 season to the end of 2026-27. This move allows Movistar to retain exclusive linear and digital broadcast rights on multiple platforms.
More details The contract is worth over $1 billion and includes TV broadcast and live-streaming rights for the UEFA Europa League, the UEFA Europa Conference League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the UEFA Youth League.

Movistar subscribers can pick from packages ranging from a special pass that includes the UEFA Champions League (as well as the UEFA Europa and Europa Conference Leagues) to an all-inclusive option that features games from all UEFA tournaments and other domestic competitions. UEFA Champions League live streaming in Spain is available via Movistar+, accessible on various devices. Movistar also offers TV broadcast coverage via its family of linear channels, such as Liga de Campeones por M+.

Aside from live Champions League streams and telecasts, Movistar subscribers in Spain can watch bonus content live and on demand. The list of extra programming comprises delayed kick-offs and replays of select matches, game highlights, dedicated football shows (including the Champions League magazine show), interviews with star players and coaches, and match analysis.
Movistar continues to be the exclusive broadcaster of the UEFA Europa League in Spain from 2024-25 to 2026-27, following a three-year extension. The commercial broadcaster, owned by Telefonica, secured a renewal contract worth over $1 billion with UEFA that also includes the broadcast and streaming rights for the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa Conference League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the UEFA Youth League.
More details

Fans can stream Europa League matches live and on-demand via Movistar’s streaming service Movistar+. Movistar+ is compatible with a wide range of devices: smart TVs and streaming devices (Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung, LG, Android TV, Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV Stick), mobiles and tablets (Android and iOS), computers (PCs and Macs using Edge, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari web browsers), and gaming consoles. In addition, Europa League games and complementary bonus content are also accessible on Movistar’s linear channels.

Subscribers can select from a range of packages, including a special pass that only includes coverage of the UEFA Europa League (and other UEFA competitions).
Football fans in Spain can watch the Spanish national team live in the UEFA Nations League on Movistar. All live action is available via Movistar’s streaming platform, Movistar +, which is only accessible in Spain.

The deal between UEFA and Movistar isn’t an exclusive one as Spanish national team matches are also available on free-to-air television but it does add to Movistar’s extensive suite of UEFA content with Champions League, Europa League and Conference League matches also available on the platform.
More details

Live coverage of Nations League matches includes pre-match build-up, half-time analysis and post-match interviews. All content is broadcast in Spanish. The Movistar + app can be downloaded for free onto iOS and Android devices but a subscription is required to access live content.
Telefónica has successfully re-negotiated its broadcast rights for LaLiga, covering Spain and Andorra. This renewed TV deal follows a regulatory re-evaluation of their initial agreement with LaLiga from 2021 to 2027. The re-acquisition, effective from the latter half of the 2024-25 season to the end of the 2026-27 season, is in response to the Spanish competition regulator CNMC's concerns.
More details CNMC had contended that Telefónica's acquisition of pay TV operator Digital+ constrained it from holding rights for a period exceeding three years. Under the new arrangement, valued at approximately €1.29 billion, Telefónica may continue broadcasting five LaLiga games per matchday through its digital subscription platform Movistar+. It has also agreed to exclusively cover three match weeks in both the 2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons. The financial commitment involves €250 million for the latter half of the 2024-25 season, increasing to €520 million for each of the following full seasons. This revised contract aligns Telefónica's rights period with DAZN's existing contract for consistent LaLiga coverage.

In addition, Movistar has the first-choice pick of 18 matches and 17 as second-choice each season. This includes key games featuring LaLiga heavyweights Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid. LaLiga fans in Spain can select from different packages to watch and stream matches, depending on their preference. The “Movistar Plus+” package includes one LaLiga match per matchday, allows streaming on up to four devices simultaneously after downloading the Movistar Plus+ App, and gives viewers access to replays for up to seven days.

However, to watch all LaLiga games live on a matchday, subscribers must purchase the “Fútbol Total” bundle. Matches are shown in HD, and viewers with a UHD decoder can watch games on Movistar’s 4K channels. Additional benefits include ad-free playbacks, available replays of games for up to seven days, simultaneous watching of live games on two devices (on the same network), and unlimited downloads on up to ten compatible devices. Moreover, subscribers can use the “Multi+” service to watch football matches on up to 2 TVs in the same residence (with a second decoder).

Movistar’s linear and digital content is supported on many devices: mobiles, tablets, desktops and laptops (in web browsers), smart TVs, and gaming consoles.

Aside from watching and streaming LaLiga matches live and on-demand, football fans in Spain can enjoy bonus LaLiga content on Movistar’s linear and digital platforms, including highlight and analytic shows such as “El Día Después” and “Noche de Champions”.
Movistar Plus holds the multi-year domestic broadcast rights to the Copa del Rey through an agreement with the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). The deal covers the 2022-23, 2023-24, and 2024-25 seasons and grants the Spanish network and its digital platform access to a large portion of the tournament’s fixtures, most of them on an exclusive basis.
More details

Under this agreement, Movistar Plus broadcasts 55 matches per season. Of those, 45 are aired exclusively through its TV channels and digital service. The contract also includes coverage of the final stages of the tournament in every season covered by the deal—featuring all four semifinal matches and the final. Matches are available in both High Definition and Standard Definition formats.

The agreement also includes permission for Movistar Plus to produce highlights and replay goals in its sports programming and news shows.

Access to Copa del Rey matches on Movistar Plus requires a subscription to its pay-TV service, available either through a set-top box or its online streaming platform. The Movistar Plus app can be installed on Smart TVs from Samsung, LG, or any device running Android TV. Streaming is also supported on Apple TV, Fire TV, and Chromecast, as well as on Android and iOS smartphones and tablets.

For desktop users, the platform can be accessed via browsers such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari. Logging in with valid user credentials is required to view content online.

About

Movistar+ history, coverage, features

Movistar + is a Spanish online streaming platform owned and operated by Telefónica. It was launched July 8, 2015 after the merger between the satellite platform Canal+ and the IPTV service Movistar TV.

The online streaming platform has added channels to its grid so fans can watch all their favorite networks on the go via their mobile devices or through their computers. Some of the channels available on this platform over the years have included all of Movistar’s channels, such as Movistar La Liga and Movistar La Liga de Campeones, and other services such as Netflix and Disney+.

Over the years, Movistar + has been able to stream most sports broadcasting rights owned by Telefónica, such as the UEFA Champions League, the Spanish Primera División, and the UEFA Europa League. Other tournaments aired by the network may not be streamed by this platform due to some restrictions.

Movistar + may be available on web browsers such as Edge and Google Chrome. Other options to stream the content provided by this service include mobile devices that work with Android and iOS. Movistar + has also been available on select smart TVs, on video game consoles such as Xbox 360, and on Android TV.
