Preview

For the first time since that unforgettable Euro 2020 final defeat, England lock horns with Italy at the iconic Wembley Stadium as both nations chase qualification for the 2024 edition of the European Championship.

England are the hosts and the goal for them will be simple: enact revenge on the Italians two years on from their heartbreaking Euro 2020 final defeat. While the English and the Azzurri have crossed paths since, this is their first encounter at Wembley since that penalty shootout defeat and the Three Lions should be confident of getting a result.

Gareth Southgate's men no longer boast a perfect record in the Euro 2024 qualifying tournament following their 1-1 stalemate away to Ukraine in the last international break.  Nonetheless, the 1966 World Cup champions remain top of their group with 13 points out of five games and are three ahead of their closest rivals who just so happen to be Italy.

As a result, Harry Kane and Co. need a win to confirm their spot in next year's European Championship as 16 points will guarantee England a top-two finish regardless of their final two qualifiers. Furthermore, a draw could suffice so long as Ukraine fail to beat Malta, which is difficult to see.

These two continental powerhouses have already met in the qualifiers, locking horns in March of this year in Naples, with Southgate's men winning 2-1. The manager still remains under scrutiny from his own fans due to frustration with their style of play, with the recent 1-0 win over Australia adding to the fire. Nonetheless, the hosts have what they need in order to beat the Azzurri and get revenge at Wembley.

Italy, meanwhile, have undergone change since that 2-1 loss to England at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. The biggest has been the managerial switch, with Roberto Mancini stepping down in mid-August before being replaced by Luciano Spalletti.

The man who led Napoli to the Serie A title last season has overseen three games so far and while his debut ended in a disappointing draw with North Macedonia, the two subsequent fixtures ended in victories, beating Ukraine 2-1 and Malta 4-0.

However, the four-time FIFA World Cup champions cannot afford another slip-up. While the Italians are second in the group, they are level on points with third-placed Ukraine and are only ahead due to their head-to-head record.

Failure to beat England away from home could see Barella and Co. drop out of the top two, which could see them miss out on automatic qualification. The visitors' UEFA Nations League performance means that they would still enter the playoffs but the Italians have suffered heartbreak in playoffs before, the most recent being their failure to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup after losing to North Macedonia. As a result, this is a must-win game for the visitors and one football lovers should not miss

Team news

England: The biggest blow to the hosts is the injury to Bukayo Saka, who was excluded from the squad despite initially being called up after it became evident that he was not fit enough to play. Southgate has no major concerns outside of that and should call Bellingham, Foden, Rashford, and Kane back to the lineup. Meanwhile, John Stones should be fit to partner Maguire at the back while Trent Alexander-Arnold might reprise his midfield role.

Italy: Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo were both forced to leave the squad after coming under investigation over alleged gambling offenses. Meanwhile, Spalletti is without the injured Federico Chiesa, Ivan Provedel, and Mattia Zaccagni. Raspadori and Kean could be the go-to men in attack while Barella and Locatelli are destined to start at the heart of Italy's midfield.

Key stats

  • England are on a seven-game unbeaten run across all competitions.

  • The Three Lions are also yet to concede a goal at home this year.

  • Italy, however, are unbeaten in five of their last six clashes with England.

  • The Azzurri have not lost a European Championship qualifier away from home since 2006.

  • England, meanwhile, have won their last 12 European Championship qualifiers at home in a row and have not conceded in 10 of those fixtures.
