RaiPlay history, coverage, features
RaiPlay is the official over-the-top (OTT) service of public broadcaster RAI in Italy. It was launched in 2005 and was known on the web as Rai.tv later on, before changing its name to RaiPlay. The service was previously operated by the company RaiNet, but the latter closed in 2014.
RaiPlay makes it possible for users to watch Rai television networks live and on demand online, both in SD and HD. It also lets users stream and listen to Rai radio channels live. Content on RaiPlay varies across a wide range of categories thanks to its extensive catalog covering documentaries, entertainment, fiction, informative programs, kids’ shows, sports, TV series and more. Some content from Rai may be available exclusively on the platform. The RaiPlay service was designed to be accessible on computers and mobile devices as well and it comes with a multi-user mode.

Radiotelevisione italiana, better known as RAI, is a public service radio and television broadcaster in Italy. It was created in August 1924 by the Italian government. RAI networks are available in other European countries, including Albania, Bosnia, Croatia, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, San Marino, Slovenia, and Switzerland.
RAI operates several free-to-air TV networks, including Rai 1, Rai 2, Rai 3, Rai 4, and Rai 5. Some of its channels focus on specific types of programming, such as Rai Movie for movies, Rai News24 for news, and Rai Sport for sports coverage. The quality of broadcasts on RAI ranges from SD to 4K UHD depending on the network. In addition to national and regional networks, RAI operates international services in various regions of the world.
Radio channels operated by RAI in Italy cover a wide range of programming, including contemporary music, news and talk shows. For years, they have been accessible on FM, AM, satellite, or the web. In the past, RAI has acquired media rights to various sports tournaments, many of which have been related to football due to the participation of Italian national teams at different levels.
International FIFA competitions that have been covered by RAI networks include the FIFA Men’s and Women’s World Cup, UEFA European Championship, UEFA Nations League, as well as UEFA youth tournaments. RAI has also provided coverage for FIFA friendly matches involving Italy’s side.
