Portugal to play without some big stars

Fernando Santos will have his boys back together for the first time since guiding the nation to the European Championship in France. However, several of the big-name players from the final win will miss Thursday’s game.

Leading the pack of absentees is captain Cristiano Ronaldo. The Real Madrid ace hurt his knee early on in the 1-0 win over Didier Deschamps crew and has thus been on the sidelines. The 31-year-old has missed Los Blancos’ opening games of the season as a result.

Furthermore, Portugal will be without the Euro 2016 Young Player of the Tournament, Renato Sanches. The Bayern Munich midfielder was withdrawn from the squad for this international break due to a muscle strain.

Speaking ahead of the game, Gibraltar midfielder Aaron Payas told their FA’s official website that it is disappointing that Portugal will have to play without their two stars.

“I would rather they had all their players fit and ready for tomorrow - Cristiano Ronaldo and Renato Sanches who are both ruled out - as it would be an honour to share the field of play with them.”
