Things went well for Porto in the first leg against Lille, but they now return home to defend their slender lead. Watch live on TV & online as these two sides look to book their place in the Champions League group stage.

A victory in the first leg in France has Porto in control of their own fate. The key to today’s second leg will be to not lose to Lille, which would guarantee the dragões approximately €8.6m.

Another important factor for today’s meeting will be the FIFA club ranking. France is a direct competitor with Portugal, and if Lille were to progress into the Champions League group stage, that could be beneficial for them in the near future when it comes to how many clubs from Ligue qualify for European competitions.

Porto’s manager, Julen Lopetegui has started his career at Porto with three consecutive victories. Two in the domestic campaign, while the third came against Lille.

What has been even more impressive is that they have yet to concede a goal in 270 minutes of football, while they’ve scored four. Going up against a Lille side that isn’t necessarily known for their goal scoring abilities, could give Porto a good opportunity to continue this trend.

“We are at halftime of the two-leg elimination,” Lopetegui told reporters on Monday.

“We need to do things better than we did in Lille. Our mentality is to progress into the group stage. The match is going to force us to be at our best. We will try to attack well when we have the ball in our possession, while defensively, we need to be organized when Lille has the ball. We need to believe in our work.”

The Spanish manager will welcome back captain Ricardo Quaresma, after he was left out at the weekend.

It had been reported that Porto was looking to move Quaresma, but with him back in the squad for tonight’s match, all looks to have been taken care.

René Girard will not care too much about who the hosts throw out there, knowing that his side needs to win the match.

“We need to be efficient, and play with determination,” Girard said in the conference room at the Estádio do Dragão.

If the French outfit is to overcome their one goal deficit from the first leg, they are going to need much more out of Salomon Kalou, as well as Belgian international Divock Origi. Needing at least one goal will eventually leave Lille vulnerable at the back, but they have been known to be well organized defensively.

Lopetegui will feel good about his side’s chances, and he will be aiming for his fifth consecutive victory in as many matches since arriving in Portugal.
