About Second League

Second League History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Vtora Liga (Second League) is the second tier of professional football in Bulgaria. It was founded in the 1950s and operates on a relegation promotion system, with a set number of teams from the Vtora liga being promoted to the Parva Liga (First League) while a set number of teams from the Vtora liga are demoted to the Treta Liga (Third League) at the end of each season.

The format of the Vtora Liga has changed in the decades since its inception, but currently operates as a single division format (since the 2012/13 campaign) as opposed to being split into two divisions.

A variety of teams have won the Vtora Liga since it became a single division league, including CSKA 1948 Sofia II, Botev Vratsa, and Marek Dupnitsa.

Media coverage, namely TV broadcasts and live-streaming rights to the Vtora Liga in Bulgaria has been under the umbrella of different entities, including Bulgarian National Television (BNT) and Nova Broadcasting Group (and its network of channels) at various points during the 1990s, 2000s, and since the turn of the 21st century.
