After Martino’s experiment failed, at least it failed by Barcelona’s epic standards, the Spanish team is set to replace him with a former player. By doing this, Barca is hoping to emulate the great results achieved by ex-Barcelona B coach Guardiola and the late Vilanova.

As the Blaugrana will likely only manage a third place and no trophies this season, a change seems needed. The list of Tata Martino’s possible replacements is exceptionally long and it features Athletic Bilbao’s Valverde, whose team will almost certainly qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Valverde and Luis Enrique

Another candidate is Luis Enrique who, after a disastrous spell at AS Roma, is guiding Celta Vigo to safety in La Liga, in his first season at the club. Both men previously played for the Catalans.

There are some outside names however, which include Frank de Boer, Ronald Koeman and current Barça B team coach Eusebio Sacristán, but these are less likely options.

Back in 2013, Real Madrid manager Ancelotti stated that Martino does not understand European football. Was he right?
