Inter vs Roma: Crunch clash in store between two big sides on October 1st

September 30, 2022 By Michelle Bonsu
Both the Nerazzurri and the Giallorossi will aim to rebound after losing their respective last fixtures prior to the international break.

Last round saw Inter and Roma, along with Milan and Juventus all lose their respective fixtures on the same matchday for the first time since February 1955. Inter suffered a shock 3-1 reversal to a Udinese side who have been on a strong kick lately, while Roma were on the wrong end of a 1-0 loss to a stubbornly defensive Atalanta side.

As such, both teams will naturally seek to back to winning ways. The loss for Inter marked their third consecutive away defeat in Serie A, something that has not happened since 2017 and Simone Inzaghi's side will need to build up some positive momentum ahead of their tricky Champions League match against Barcelona next week. Despite their struggles, the Nerazzurri have won their last seven home Serie A games, and could potentially make it eight should they maintain their long-standing good record against Roma on Saturday.

Indeed, not only are Inter unbeaten in their last ten meetings with Roma in Serie A - with their last loss happening in 2017 - but also the Nerazzurri have beaten the Giallorossi 75 times in Italian football's top flight, while scoring 290 goals. That is their best performance against any other side in this league in history. Of course, Roma will look to end that run as the Lupi come into this match having lost two of their last three matches, which is as many losses as they had initially suffered from their first 21 in the league.

Jose Mourinho's side have been seemingly given a big boost with the report that Paulo Dybala could be involved in some capacity. The Argentinian striker, who has been directly involved in all but three of Roma's eight Serie A goals so far this season, missed his team's last game due to a muscular issue, but Italian reports have claimed that he is expected to participate in training and thus could make the trip to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on Saturday.

Worryingly for the team and their fans, Roma's two most recent defeats were not to fellow big sides, but rather minnows Udinese and Atalanta. The defeat to Udinese, a 4-0 result was especially shocking, but as noted before, the Zebrette have been on a turbo-charged kick and as a result are presently on third place. That being said, it is still early on in the season, meaning that there is plenty of time for teams like Roma and Inter to close some of that gap.

Team news: Inter vs Roma

Inter: Romelu Lukaku and Marcelo Brozovic will miss out, but Hakan Calhanoglu could potentially be involved in some capacity.

Roma: Both Marash Kumbulla and Stephan El Shaarawy are now fit to return, but Georginio Wijnaldum and Rick Karsdorp remain out, while Paulo Dybala will need to pass a late fitness test to determine his involvement.
