After a 6-0 mauling at the hands of the Citizens in the first leg, Sam Allardyce's side will not be in a buoyant mood when they welcome free scoring Manchester City to the Upton Park.

West Ham vs Man City - January 21, 2014Preview: City poised to clinch a place in the final

Only an unlikely miracle will now prevent Pellegrini’s side to make it to the final of the Capital One Cup after a thoroughly dominating performance in the first leg. City demolished the Hammers 6-0 at the Etihad Stadium courtesy of an Alvaro Negredo hat-trick, an Edin Dzeko brace and another goal from talismanic midfielder Yaya Toure.

West Ham’s 6-0 deficit means that even a repeat of their finest performance against the sky blues, which saw them scoring a 6-1 victory over the Etihad side back in the 1962-1963 season will not be enough to see them through to the final. Furthermore the irons have not defeated City since 2009 when they scored a 1-0 victory at the Upton Park which was their only victory in 16 meetings between the two sides.

Man City’s recent form makes it more of a daunting task for West Ham as it already is and the hammers will be looking to avoid another mauling at the hands of a side which has racked up 103 goals this season already. City scored a convincing victory over Cardiff City and in the process recorded their 15th victory in a 17 game unbeaten run.

Their recent form has definitely lifted the spirits in the City camp and captain Vincent Kompany reiterated that the current Man City side has a potential to win an unimaginable quadruple, but manager Manuel Pellegrini has put all such claims to rest and has refused to get carried away.

"All of the players must know that winning tomorrow is the only important thing," he declared when asked by reporters about a potential quadruple.

"It's not important for us to think about what happens in one or two months.

"I am absolutely sure that this Premier League will be very close, with five or six teams fighting for the title, with maybe one or two points separating.

"It's so difficult to know what will happen in the future. We will try to do a good game for the fans - so far we are doing well but every game is different.”

City have triumphed in the competition twice back in 1970 and 1976 and are on course on reaching the final for the fourth time where they will face either Sunderland or arch rivals Manchester United.
West Ham on the other hand have never won the competition but have emerged runners-up on two occasions. Kevin Nolan is expected to make a return to the starting eleven after serving a four match ban following his red card at Fulham. James Tomkins will also be available for selection after serving a one match suspension for his dismissal against Cardiff City.

Sam Allardyce has a defensive headache with both Guy Demel and Winston Reid still on the sidelines. Furthermore George McCartney’s injury during the warm-up prior to the weekend match against Newcastle, forced Matt Taylor to play in an unfamiliar right back position, the move did not favour the hammers who lost 3-1 to Alan Padrew’s side.

However West Ham fans will be relieved with the confident news pertaining to record signing Andy Carroll who after missing most of the season due to a foot problem is gradually returning to full fitness.

Sergio Aguero on the other hand scored in successive matches after coming off the bench in the matches against Blackburn and Cardiff, but Pellegrini has insisted that he will not rush his star striker back into the squad.

“It would be difficult to leave him out. We'll see which is the best way to start the next one. For the moment Sergio is just coming back from an injury and he's not fit yet to play 90 minutes,” said the Chilean before the match against Cardiff.

Samir Nasri is definitely out of the match after being at the receiving end of a vicious tackle from Newcastle defender Yanga Mbiwa but summer signing Stevan Jovetic has a chance of making it to the squad.
