Preview: Golden goals for golden boy Cristiano?
Real Madrid’s camp is buzzing with euphoria following Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2013 FIFA Ballon d’Or triumph on Monday. Los Blancos will want to keep the fire burning by reaching the Copa del Rey quarter-finals at Osasuna’s expense.
They carry an advantage – not only because of their size on paper but because of their first leg victory at the Santiago Bernabeu. Jese Rodriguez and Karim Benzema’s goals were enough to separate the two teams at the end of the day as Iker Casillas kept a clean sheet.
However, Carlo Ancelotti prefers to be cautious.
“The team are focused and up for the game. Everyone knows how tough it is to play there,” the Italian boss declared during the pre-match press conference.
“It will be a very intense game and our opponents will do everything they can to get through to the next round. We shouldn't think that we hold an advantage and we have to try to score as soon as possible.”
The Spanish giants struggled to defeat Espanyol at the Cornella-El Prat last weekend. Ronaldo seemed distracted by the weight of the Ballon d’Or on his mind. The Portuguese forward missed a sitter among a handful of opportunities but Benzema’s remarkable performance, Diego Lopez’s brilliance in post and Pepe’s solid header made the difference.
Will freshly crowned FIFA Ballon d'Or 2013 winner Cristiano Ronaldo make up for his disappointing game against Espanyol with a stellar show against Osasuna this Wednesday?
