World Cup Qualifying - How to watch El Salvador vs Mexico on October 13, 2021

October 13, 2021 By Oscar Rojas
Los Cuscatlecos will face the leaders of the Final Round in a clash that could be crucial for their World Cup hopes. Get a grip on this game with our guide.

This month's International Break will watch the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers almost reaching its halfway point. Before that happens, one of the most intense games in the region is set to take place when Mexico make the trip to El Salvador.

El Salvador will get to this game in sixth place out of eight teams in the Qualifiers. La Selecta seemed to be gaining some momentum after claiming a win against Panama, but their hopes for two wins in a row were crushed by Costa Rica and their comeback on Sunday. Now, the team coached by Hugo Pérez must claim at least one point here to keep themselves in contention for a World Cup spot.

This game will represent quite a challenge for Hugo Pérez and his team, since they will have to face Mexico without some key players. Narciso Orellana and Roberto Domínguez will have to serve their respective bans after Sunday's match, while Eriq Zavaleta, who is considered by many as the heart and soul of El Salvador's defense, was ruled out due to an injury. The rest of the squad, including goalscorers Erick Dueñas and Mauricio Henríquez, will be fit to play this game.

On the other hand, Mexico will make it to this game in high spirits after beating Honduras with a three-nil score in front of their supporters. That win gave El Tri a chance to climb back to the top spot in the CONCACAF Qualifiers and gave them their third win of the competition while also kept them unbeaten. This will be the first of four straight away games for Mexico, something that could really change the course of things in the process to know the teams that will play in Qatar next year.

Coach Gerardo Martino will have to plan this game without some absences, as right back Jorge Sánchez has been ruled out for this game due to injury. Meanwhile, center back César Montes will not be available after being booked against Honduras last Sunday. One more doubt for Martino will have to do with Raúl Jiménez and Hirving Lozano's availability, since both picked up serious knocks during the clash against Honduras, but they are being considered as two of the starters for Wednesday's game.

Mexico and El Salvador have faced each other quite a few times in history, although Mexico has dominated their encounters with a record of 28 wins, one draw, and only four wins for Los Cuscatlecos. Mexico must be cautious during this visit, since two of those defeats have taken place at Estadio Cuscatlán, the place where this match will be held. El Salvador's last win against Mexico came during the 2010 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers with a 2-1 score, but since that game took place, Mexico have earned eight wins in a row in all comps, scoring 23 times and conceding only four goals.
