Chiellini hoping to secure new deal

Euro 2020 winner looking to secure future after contract expires at Juventus

July 15, 2021 By Michelle Bonsu
Despite captaining Italy to the Euro 2020 title, the veteran defender's club situation is still up in the air after his deal expired.

Last weekend saw the conclusion of the Euro 2020 tour, with Italy beating England after 120 minutes and spot-kicks, and the entire team, who were captained by experienced defender Giorgio Chiellini, are now being feted by fans all over Italy and around the world.

However, although Chiellini is now enjoying some much needed relaxation on his summer holiday, there will be quite a few things on his mind. For starters, the 37-year-old, who will turn 38 in August, is now without a club after his deal with Juventus expired at the end of last month. The Bianconeri have yet to make any noise about renewing it, and the new season is just around the corner. There are reports that new terms are still being worked out, but nothing has come to fruition.

Thus, considering that Chiellini has spent nearly two decades (17 years, to be exact) on the books at the Bianconeri, it's no surprise his agent, Davide Lippi, is speaking out.

In an interview with Italy's Radio Radio, Lippi was very clear on what needed to happen for his client's situation to be resolved.

"[Well], it takes two to sign a contract. [And while] there's no problem with Juventus [as] we said we'd meet up later in the summer, we haven't yet sat down to discuss a renewal".

Given Chiellini's experience and success at club, and now national level, Lippi was asked if there were other options on the table, but stated that there weren't at the moment. Moreover, his agent has made it clear that his client isn't looking to hang up his boots just yet.

However, considering that the veteran defender has won nine Scudetti and now a Euro title, among others, it'd be quite surprising other teams won't opt to take a punt on him if Juventus decide not to offer him a a short-term contract.
