Preview

Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City return to action on Monday, with Guardiola's high-flying side preparing for a tricky trip to Brentford in the league. Given the results elsewhere, particularly Arsenal's win over Liverpool, the Cityzens have the golden opportunity to move closer to the top but should face a stern test at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Brentford boast the home advantage and while this should make Man City's day even harder, the hosts enter this game on the back of a defeat to Tottenham. The Bees suffered a 3-2 loss in North London despite their dominant first-half display, with that result leaving the team dangerously close to the relegation zone.

Neal Maupay scored a rare goal in that Spurs visit and rattled the Tottenham players and fans by mocking James Maddison's dart celebration. However, Ange Postecoglou's side had the last laugh, with Destiny Udogie, Brennan Johnson, and Richarlison all scoring shortly after the break to complete a turnaround.

Ivan Toney also got on the scoresheet thanks to a horrible backpass from Udogie to keep his post-ban goalscoring streak running but that proved to be nothing more than a consolation. If Thomas Frank's side are to come away from their Man City clash with anything, they will need their striker at his best.

The 27-year-old has done well against the Cityzens before, scoring a memorable brace at the Etihad Stadium last season to earn the Bees an unforgettable 2-1 win over Guardiola's men. However, Brentford have won only once in their last nine matches and lost a whopping seven times during that run.

Manchester City, meanwhile, have been one of the most in-form teams in world football. This is a story as old as time itself: the Cityzens start the season well but suffer a few bumps early on before hitting their peak right before the title run-in.

Guardiola's men enter this tie with an eight-game winning streak and have not lost a game since going 1-0 down away to Aston Villa in early December, a run of 11 matches unbeaten. Furthermore, with Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne having returned from injury, many fans now see Man City as the clear favorites for the title. Furthermore, given Arsenal's win over Liverpool on Sunday, the defending champions could further bolster their odds with a midweek victory.

Klopp's men were five points ahead at the top but following their 3-1 loss at the Emirates Stadium, Haaland and Co. could move within two points of the Merseyside giants with a win on Monday. The Gunners are also only two points adrift but Guardiola's side have a game in hand over both Arsenal and Liverpool.

Man City lost both home and away against Brentford last season, though the latter defeat came after they were officially crowned the Premier League champions. Nonetheless, Guardiola will want revenge over Thomas Frank's side, a notoriously difficult team to overcome for the elites.

Team news

Brentford: Bryan Mbeumo and Kevin Schade are both injured while Yoane Wissa and Saman Ghoddos are at AFCON 2023 and the Asian Cup 2023 respectively. Likewise, both Aaron Hickey and Rico Henry are on the sidelines, meaning Sergio Reguilon will likely feature. Ivan Toney should lead the line and will be looking to score in the third game running since his return from suspension.

Man City: With Manuel Akanji returning, Guardiola has a fully-fit squad for the first time in ages. Erling Haaland made his much-awaited return to the pitch in the win over Burnley while Kevin de Bruyne is already back to his best despite his lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Key stats

  • Man City are on a three-game winning streak away from home.

  • However, Brentford have won their last two encounters against City and could become the first team in history to win three on the trot against Guardiola.

  • The Bees have kept only one clean sheet in their last 11 matches.

  • The Cityzens have lost two of their last four trips to London.
