Preview

A huge Premier League game will be taking place this weekend, one that could gravely influence what has been a fantastic title race so far. That match is Arsenal's showdown with Liverpool live this Sunday on Peacock exclusively, with the Gunners desperately needing the three points in this 11:30 a.m. ET battle at the Emirates Stadium.

The North London giants enter this tie on the back of a two-game winning streak in the league, beating Crystal Palace 5-0 before overcoming Nottingham Forest in a nervy 2-1 triumph following their near two-week break.

Despite conceding a cheap goal at the City Ground, Arteta's men left Forest with a smile on their faces. That was a must-win game for Arsenal, and given how they have fared in their last two trips to that ground, a result was not guaranteed.

Nonetheless, the Gunners remain five points behind Liverpool thanks to a horrible run of form during the festive period. The hosts went on a run of one win out of seven between early December and early January, including a three-game losing streak against West Ham, Fulham, and — surprise, surprise — Liverpool.

That defeat against the Merseyside giants came at the Emirates Stadium as well but it was an FA Cup showdown. In an all-too-familiar tale, Arteta's men dominated the game and created several opportunities but were let down by a lack of clinicalness while their rivals took their opportunities.

And with that, Saka and Co. crashed out of both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, thus leaving the UEFA Champions League and Premier League as their only routes to silverware. Their European showdown with Porto is fast approaching but failure to overcome Liverpool could leave Arsenal eight points behind the Reds, a potentially insurmountable gap to overcome.

Liverpool, on the flip side, enter this tie on the back of a more convincing win. While Arsenal beat Nottingham Forest by a one-goal margin, Klopp's men hosted Chelsea at Anfield and thrashed the London giants 4-1.

Diogo Jota, Conor Bradley, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Luis Diaz all got on the scoresheet while Darwin Nunez also impressed despite missing a penalty and hitting the woodwork on several other occasions.

That was the club's 15th win of the Premier League campaign and their eighth victory from their last 10 matches. This run includes crucial triumphs over Fulham, Arsenal, Newcastle, and West Ham.

However, that win over Arsenal came in the FA Cup. When the two teams locked horns at Anfield in the Premier League in late December, the two English giants played out a cagey 1-1 draw, with Mohamed Salah grabbing the crucial equalizer.

Furthermore, Klopp's men lost 3-2 the last time they visited the Gunners in the league. However, with the German manager stepping down at the end of the season, his players are keen on achieving something special in his final campaign and beating Arsenal in North London would boost their odds of winning the Premier League.

Team news

Arsenal: Jurrien Timber is progressing well from injury but is yet to return from the ACL issue he picked up on Matchweek 1. Fabio Vieira also remains sidelined. Furthermore, Thomas Partey has suffered a setback just days after returning to training. Elsewhere, Takehiro Tomiyasu is expected back in London soon following Japan's Asian Cup exit but will not feature in this tie while question marks linger over Gabriel Jesus, who played at Forest despite nursing a knee issue.

Liverpool: Mohamed Salah is unavailable for this tie due to a hamstring injury he picked up at the Africa Cup of Nations while Darwin Nunez is a doubt. Impressive youngster Conor Bradly should sadly miss out after the club confirmed the death of his father. Alexis Mac Allister should be fit for this fixture but Kostas Tsimikas, Stefan Bajcetic, Ben Doak, or Joel Matip all miss out due to injury. Thiago Alcantara has returned to training but is unlikely to feature.

Key stats

  • This could be only the sixth time in history (and second time for Klopp's Liverpool) that a club have won two away games at Arsenal in the same season.

  • The Gunners are unbeaten in their last three Premier League clashes with the Merseyside giants (W1, D2).

  • The last time Liverpool failed to beat the North London giants in four or more consecutive Premier League matches was between December 2014 and January 2016 during Wenger's reign.

  • This match will be the 200th league encounter between these two giants, with only four other fixtures having been played over 200 times.

  • Klopp's side are unbeaten in their last 15 games and have not lost a league match since late September when they went 2-1 down at Tottenham.
