Less than a month after starting his new position, 2006 World Cup winner and former Rososneri midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has already quit.

The upcoming campaign hasn't started yet, but there's already a lot of drama brewing for Fiorentina.

The Tuscan side arguably had a very turbulent campaign last season as they saw coach Giuseppe Iachini sacked in November, only for his replacement, Cesare Prandelli to step down to personal reasons in March and Iachini to be brought back into the fold. Ultimately, Fiorentina ended up finishing in 13th, after experiencing highs like beating Juventus 3-0 in Turin and lows like flirting with the relegation zone at one point.

Iachini ultimately wasn't given a vote of confidence, as Fiorentina decided to hire Gennaro Gattuso on May 25th. Gattuso is a well-known personality, having played for AC Milan and the Italian national team, where he won a World Cup in 2006 and two Champions League titles. After his retirement, the midfielder moved into management, with his most notable positions including Milan and most recently, Napoli.

However, the alliance between Gattuso and Fiorentina has come to an abrupt end, after the club announced that the two parties had decided to part ways "by mutual agreement".

It's a shocking development, to say the least.

In fact, it's been less than a month since the Viola announced they had secured the services of Gattuso as their new manager for the 2021/2022 season.

Reportedly, the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back was an inability to agree on planned transfer moves for this summer's market. In addition, the club apparently wasn't too keen on Gattuso's agent, Jorge Mendes's involvement in proceedings.

Fiorentina have moved quickly to secure another manager, with former player Alberto Aquilani being mooted as a possibility. Aquilani, who also played for Roma and Liverpool, is presently the manager of Fiorentina's Primavera (youth) squad.
