2024 has just begun but Real Madrid are already gearing up for a tricky test. The Spanish giants are currently in Riyadh for the Spanish Super Cup where they will lock horns with bitter rivals Atletico Madrid on Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET in the latest edition of the Madrid Derby.

Los Blancos enter this fixture on the back of great form, having won their last five games in a row across all competitions, the most recent being the 3-1 win over Arandina in the Copa del Rey round of 32.

Ancelotti named a heavily rotated side in that Copa del Rey triumph, but with that result out of the way, expect Los Blancos to start a strong lineup as the Spanish champions seek revenge over their bitter rivals.

This will be the second Madrid Derby of the season, with Ancelotti's men and Simeone's crew having locked horns back in September. Bellingham and Co. visited the Metropolitano Stadium in that game but suffered a frustrating 3-1 loss, with Toni Kroos getting on the scoresheet while Alvaro Morata (twice) and Antoine Griezmann scored for the hosts.

However, the Spanish top-flight heavyweights have been impeccable since that defeat, and after losing the Spanish Super Cup title to Barcelona in the final last season, Ancelotti will not want to suffer back-to-back exits against another rival.

Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, will look to make it back-to-back wins over the UEFA Champions League kings. However, unlike the Merengues, Los Rojiblancos do not boast a rich history in the Supercopa de Espana.

Madrid's other heavyweights have won the Spanish Super Cup only twice before, compared to Real Madrid's 12 titles, with their last success coming in 2014. This means Simeone's men have never won the competition since it became a four-team knockout competition held in Saudi Arabia, though they did make the final in the inaugural edition under this format. That was in 2019-20 and they eventually lost the final on penalties to — surprise, surprise — Real Madrid.

Furthermore, the form of Griezmann and Co. has endured hiccups recently. While Atletico beat Lugo 3-1 in the Copa del Rey recently, the Spanish heavyweights lost 4-3 away to title contenders Girona in La Liga in the game before that.

Additionally, the club have won only two of their last five league games, suffering defeats in their last two away ties — at Girona and Athletic Club. Will the Madrid side return to winning ways in this highly-anticipated derby?
