Preview

Arsenal are preparing for their penultimate game of 2023 as the North London giants welcome West Ham to the Emirates Stadium on Thursday. This 3:15 p.m. ET showdown presents the Gunners with the opportunity to reclaim the no.1 spot in the league but beating the Hammers is no walk in the park.

Mikel Arteta's men enter this tie on the back of their recent trip to Anfield, a game which ended in a one-all stalemate. Gabriel Magalhães grabbed the opening goal for the Gunners but Mohamed Salah equalized with a stunner as both sides failed to find the winner.

While a point at Anfield is never a bad result and while Arteta's men flexed their defensive prowess, questions were raised about Arsenal's attack, with Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus, and Bukayo Saka struggling to trouble another top side in the final third.

Nonetheless, that result was enough to keep the North London giants in first place for the weekend, though that has been temporarily snatched by Liverpool following their 2-0 victory over Burnley on Tuesday.

Arteta's men lost a game earlier this month, going 1-0 down away to Aston Villa, but the Gunners have been impenetrable for the most part this campaign. In fact, Arteta's side have not lost a game at the Emirates Stadium all season, drawing twice — against Fulham and Tottenham — while winning every other home tie.

However, injuries and a suspension have left Mikel with a selection headache, particularly in midfield. Arsenal have already lost to West Ham this season, going 3-1 down away to the Hammers in the Carabao Cup, and will want to avoid back-to-back losses.

The Premier League title contenders rested several of their key players in that loss but will name the strongest possible starting eleven in this Thursday showdown. Will they get revenge for that League Cup embarrassment?

Unlike the hosts, West Ham enter this game on the back of a win — a spectacular victory, in fact. The Hammers were in action over the weekend, recording an impressive 2-0 victory at home to English giants Manchester United.

While the Red Devils have been poor for most of the season, David Moyes' men celebrated this result nonetheless after putting in a lovely display. Mohammed Kudus and Lucas Paqueta, in particular, shined, with the Ghanaiain scoring the second goal while the Brazilian assisted Jarrod Bowen for the opener.

That result had taken Bowen and Co. above Manchester United in the table but Ten Hag's men won during the midweek, beating Aston Villa 3-2 to demote West Ham back to seventh in the standings.

Moyes' men do not need a win to leapfrog the Red Devils as a draw would suffice thanks to their superior goal difference. However, a win at the Emirates Stadium would be a major boost in West Ham's attempt to achieve something special this campaign.

As mentioned earlier, the Hammers have already beaten Arsenal once this season, triumphing 3-1 in the Carabao Cup round of 16 thanks to a Ben White own goal and strikes from Kudus and Bowen.

However, the visitors do not boast an admirable record at the Emirates Stadium. The same is true for David Moyes, who oversaw a 3-1 defeat last season. Thursday will present the Scottish manager with another opportunity to end this run.

Team news

Arsenal: Despite the rumors online, Thomas Partey and Takehiro Tomiyasu have not returned from injury. Jurrien Timber is a long-term absentee while Fabio Vieira is yet to return to fitness. Furthermore, Kai Havertz is suspended for this game after picking up his fifth booking of the season in the draw at Anfield.

West Ham: Nayef Aguerd and Maxwel Cornet were ill for the win over Manchester United but should be fine for this fixture. Unfortunately, Michail Antonio has not yet regained fitness and will watch this fixture from the stands. Bowen, Kudus, and Paqueta are all expected to start and will want to take down the Gunners once more.

Key stats

  • Arsenal have won 22 of their last 30 home games against West Ham.

  • Meanwhile, West Ham are Arsenal's second favorite opponent in the Premier League, sitting behind only Everton (37).
