Top games to watch on Matchday 4 of the UEFA Europa League
Ajax vs. Brighton
Two popular yet struggling teams face off on Thursday as Ajax host Brighton with the sole goal of avenging their recent defeat to the Seagulls. The Dutch giants visited the Premier League side in their most recent UEFA Europa League tie and lost 2-0 at the Amex. However, things have turned around for de Godenzonen lately, winning their last two matches, and will be aiming to make it three on the trot.
Meanwhile, Brighton's 2-0 victory over Ajax is their one positive result in a string of disappointing matches. That triumph was one of only two wins in their last 10 matches across all competitions and as a result, De Zerbi's men sit third in the table with four points. Ajax are bottom of the table with two while group leaders Marseille are one ahead with five, thus making this showdown a crucial tie in the race to make it to the knockout stage.
Toulouse vs. Liverpool
After suffering a disappointing draw away to Luton Town in the Premier League, Liverpool will want to return to winning ways this midweek. The Reds thrashed the French outfit 5-1 when they visited them at Anfield two weeks ago but since then, Klopp's men are yet to deliver a convincing victory on the road, beating Bournemouth by two goals to one in the Carabao Cup before slipping up at Kenilworth Road.
On the other side, the hosts are 14th in Ligue 1 and haven't won a game since beating LASK on Matchday 2 in early October. Since the defeat to Liverpool, Toulouse have suffered back-to-back losses and will need to perform a miracle in order to return to winning ways at the expense of Jurgen Klopp's side.
AEK Athens vs. Marseille
In another crucial Group B showdown, AEK Athens and Marseille, two clubs looking to make it to the knockout stage, face off. These two sides locked horns in the previous round, with the Ligue 1 heavyweights emerging victorious via a 3-1 score line. As a result, the hosts sit in second, level on points with Brighton but ahead due to a superior head-to-head record. A defeat on Thursday could see them drop down to third, which they must avoid at all costs.
Meanwhile, the visitors remain inconsistent, beating AEK Athens 3-1, but have stumbled domestically against the likes of Lille, Nice, and Monaco. Gattuso's men currently top the table but that slim one-point advantage means they cannot take their foot off the pedal. Don't miss this showdown.
West Ham vs. Olympiacos
And finally, we have a Group A showdown between West Ham and Olympiacos in a game that could shape this group. The Hammers are currently top of the table but their 2-1 loss to the Greek outfit in the previous round has turned things around. The visitors are now on four points, only two behind David Moyes' men, while Freiburg are level on points with the London club.
Not only will Bowen and Co. wish to progress to the next round but West Ham will want to win the group as well. As a result, they cannot afford a slip-up. The Hammers recently beat Arsenal 3-1 in the Carabao Cup but have lost four of their last five matches and will have to return to winning ways.
